Stress may be crippling, and it can exacerbate or cause health issues. History

Early in the 20th century

It is American physiologist Walter Bradford Cannon who first describes the “flight-or-flight response.” It is already widely accepted that this is the initial stage of the general adaptation syndrome, which organisms employ to cope with stress.

1936

The Austrian doctor Hans Selye starts his groundbreaking research on stress at McGill University in Montreal. Selye is credited with creating the idea of the general adaption syndrome.  

1950s

The Type A personality theory is developed by American cardiologists Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman. For these individuals, stress is frequently a way of life—and death.  

1974

The company that promotes stress management at work and in the home is established. In 1981, the organization changed its name to the International Stress and Tension Control Society, and in 1989, it became the International Stress Management Association.
